Developing Guidelines for Judging the Cost and Benefit of Fixing Usability Problems

Abstract: When we conduct an expert analysis, we evaluate an interface for usability problems and then prioritize those problems according to importance and difficulty. By mapping the cost and benefit involved in fixing problems, we essentially give clients a sense for the return-on-investment (ROI) they could gain by addressing each problem. When we present this method at usability and human-computer interaction conferences, many people ask how we determine the benefit to users or the cost to developers. This document represents our first pass at outlining the guidelines we use for judging importance and difficulty. It also compares MAYA’s method with those of Dr. Jakob Nielsen, Denise Pierotti, and the Online Computer Library Center.

Presented as a poster at the Eleventh Annual Usability Professionals’ Association Conference.
