Composer Mason Bates Chats at MAYA about the Creative Process
Heinz Award winner and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Composer of the Year Mason Bates shared thoughts on his creative process during a pre-concert reception at MAYA. A small group of guests from Pittsburgh’s design, technology and business sectors gathered to learn how Bates is bringing the searing beats that characterize electronic ‘techno’ music to traditional symphonic compositions. His work includes experiments to enable musicians around the world to collaborate and contribute their own virtuoso riffs to his pieces.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is performing four of Bates’ works during his guest performances in November and December, 2012, including the world premiere of a violin concerto co-commissioned by the PSO.
